Equal Divisions in Carpentry

Standard

Challenge your students to divide an 8.5” by 11” piece of paper into three equal sections (landscape mode). Give them a ruler and turn them loose. Once they admit that 11 doesn’t divide nicely by 3, they may be ready to learn a carpenter’s trick. It is explained really nicely on this site.

If you use this in Math 20-2, ask your students to prove why the trick works. (ASA)
